RELEASE OF MARINE TURTLES
On 26th August the traditional release of marine turtles took place on the shores of the Cabrera National Park in the presence of the media.
On this occasion three marine turtles were released after having recovered in the Aspro Natura Foundation centre.
The programme, financed by the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno de Las Islas Baleares and the Aspro Natura Foundation, were joined by the President del Gobierno Balear, Don. Francesc Antich, the Conseller de Medio Ambiente, Miquel Ángel Grimalt y el Director General de Caza, Protección de Especies y Educación Ambiental, Pere Ramón Bonet.
During the last 15 years the Aspro Natura Foundation has run a campaign of aiding stranded marine turtles, with the main objectives being the rescue and recovery of specimens, the preparation of annual turtle stranding records and the development of environmental education programmes.
The campaign of awareness consists of an annual release of marine turtles, with high media coverage, the principal objective of this symbolic act being to make the population of the Balearic Islands aware of the problems suffered by these marine turtles and to involve them in the conservation of the environment.
